StarCam is a 4K ultra-high-definition, all-weather video camera system that is live-streaming 24/7 on YouTube. This camera is a joint project of
CFHT and Japanese media company Asahi Shimbun, in collaboration with Subaru Telescope, NAOJ.
This camera faces west and is sensitive enough capture live video of the sky, day and night. This allows for viewing of transient
events such as billowing clouds, meteor showers, eclipses, satellites, and overflying aircraft. Every evening the beautiful Maunakea sunset is also visible
behind the foreground observatories.
Weather data below the video updates every 10 seconds.
The Maunakea Observatories visible above from left to right: James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), Submillimeter Array (SMA), Subaru Telescope,
W.M. Keck Observatory (I and II), and the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF).
This camera operates 24 hours a day, and faithfully exhibits the dark of night. The camera may be periodically obscured by
inclement weather such as fog, rain, ice, or snow. This livestream is provided for public viewing on a best effort basis; CFHT provides no guarantee on uptime, and may
temporarily disable the livestream with no notice. Live chat and other features are available directly on Youtube.
