A short break to put a light on the air for
the
Christmas Light party... Was a wonderful afternoon, with a gorgeous
Maui
on the other side of an unusually calm channel!
Thanks to all those who answered my calls...
from South Africa to Japan, New Zealand to New Jersey, it has been a
lot
of fun...

A nice afternoon, quiet ocean, little wind, whales jumping, and even some contacts, from Japan to New Brunswick, from Poland to Brasil... The closest station in the log is more than 2000 miles away though. It is easier from VE7!
Kauhola Point is the only lighthouse on the
island
with a real high tower... There is even trace of the previous towers
(the
concrete pads for the wooden structures). The site is gorgeous, but the
dirt road to get there a bit bumpy.

Mahukona Light
HAW-012
Recon on 2001-02-11
A short visit to check the place and see how
easy it would be to set up a station close to the light. Looks good...
Pictures below are from this visit. The Light will be activated soon!
Mahukona Light (4 sec 64 ft 6M)
The light is shown from a 22-foot white pyramidal concrete tower on Kaoma Point, S of the old village of Mahukona, once an important harbor and the terminal of the "Hawaiian Railroad Company" which served the sugar plantations of the North Koahala (go here for an interesting article on the Hawaiian Railroad Company and Mahukona). The ruins of a former tower can still be seen 100 ft N of the current tower.
Here are a few pictures. If you click on them, you will get a full size version (~150 to 200 kB).

Kawaihae Light
HAW-011
2002-01-02
A bit more than an hour on the air, at the end
of a very nice afternoon. A gorgious sunset, and some nice QSO's...
2001-02-04/05
A poor propagation... but a lot of fun for these
two hours (02:00 to 04:00 UTC, Feb. 5, 2001) at the Kawaihae Light.
Good
to meet ARLHS members on the air!
In the log, stations from the Mainland (CA, WA,
IL, LA, KY, OK), Argentina and Chile.
The station installation did not take long
(~20
mn to set everything up, and 10 mn to pack ) .
No way to bring the truck close to that light...
You need to carry your power!
Kawaihae Light (6 sec 59 ft 9M)
The light is shown from a 36-foot white pyramidal concrete tower on the NW side of Kawaihae.
Here are a few pictures. If you click on them, you will get a full size version (~150 to 200 kB).

Ka Lae Light (South Point)
HAW-008
2001-01-06/07
20 mn in the morning and 45 mn at Sunset for
a very short activity from South Point... Was Kids' Day, with a lot of
stations around and not too many people listening for weak signals!
In addition to TX, OR, WA and CA, El Salvador
and South Oural answered the calls. No member of the ARLHS for this
first
operation from a lighthouse, announced at the last minute. The hike to
Green Sand Beach with the family and the hours spent over there were
just
wonderful though!
Ka Lae Light (6 sec 60 ft 8M)
The light is shown from a 32-foot white pole
with a black and white diamond-shaped daymark on the outer end of South
Cape.
