Abstract: The Pan-STARRS-1 (PS1) 1.8 m telescope will achieve operational readiness, late in 2007 and will start its scientific program in 2008. In addition to, its main camera, it will use its Imaging Sky Probe (ISP) to obtain shallow, images in all its bandpasses (g,r,i,z, and Y)to bright star calibration and, a thorough characterization of atmospheric extinction conditions., In addition to this ISP, we are building an Ultraviolet Imaging Probe (UIP) that will obtain u-band data with the same field of view as the ISP. Over the, 3 years of PS1 science operation, UIP will collect the first u-band survey of, 3-4 of the sky. By utilizing the information on extinction in the other filters, covered by ISP, and by utilizing the PS1 Image Processing Pipeline (IPP), a very well calibrated, uniform, but shallow u-band survey will be achieved., , The UIP survey will facilitate the calibration of a future, much deeper u-band survey done with CFHT's MegaCam.
