Spatial distribution of metals around galaxies in the center of CFHTLS-D4: Blowing Winds

Abstract: We are engaged in a programme to study the spatial distribution of metals around galaxies in CFHTLS-D4. We search for absorption lines in the spectra of background quasars and correlate the corresponding gas with galaxies in the field. We have obtained VLT-UVES time to observe at high spectral resolution the line of sight toward the bright quasar LBQS~2212$-$1759 (V~=~17.9, $z_{/rm em}$~=~2.217) located in the center of CFHTLS-D4 and VLT-FORS time to observe lines of sight toward other fainter QSOs in the field. The later QSOs have been identified by optical selection using the CFHTLS imaging and follow-up confirmation at the Anglo-Australian-Telescope. The AAT observations have led to the detection of about 250 QSOs with g~$<$~22.5.
